mar
Hello all, I'm looking to embellish our set for The Wind in the Willows with a run of long grass across the front of the stage but I'm failing to find an off-the -shelf product that will do the job. It's either single tufts of fake long grass or large mats of shorter turf. What I really want is a long strip of long grass with minimal depth. Has anyone seen such a thing at an affordable price (budget is very low, ideally no more than £50 to cover 7m) or have any bright ideas how we might make something ourselves? Cutting strips of semi-rigid plastic is the best idea I've come up with so far. I'm reluctant to consider a rigid wooden cutout as I think I saw an actor exit of the front of the stage in rehearsal yesterday and don't want the trip hazard. It might be that this ends up being the only solution and he has to go a different way. Thanks Michael
beware
A roll of foam, some scissors and green paint. Or possibly a green camping mat?
mar
That's an excellent idea, I'll can ask our school cadet force if they have any old ones I can cut up. They will be a nice military olive green that I can highlight with paint to match the rest of the stage.

kerry davies
Some years back this was asked here and I then suggested a visit to the local butchers. Everyone thought I was bonkers but guess where the OP ended up? That's right, a greengrocer's.  There is some relatively short stuff on eBay; HERE! but check out local florists and garden centres in case they have "scrap" going spare. mar
Andy, while the idea of real living grass would be nice (particularly if we can get some nice fragrant flowers to add some authentic scent) I can't image it would do my 100 year old parquet floor much good - most of the building interior is wood! I'd seen lots of similar rolls of decorative turf, but nothing really has the height I want for the effect. Think more long grasses and reeds along a wild river bank rather than manicured lawn. The cadets have offered me some old camping mats for free so I think that is the cheapest and easiest option. Leaves me some budget to buy a few clusters of better fake grass and ferns for effect on stage. Thanks for all the help, I'll try to remember to post a pic when it's all done. The main problem with living grass is enough light and air to keep it alive, also solvable without too much hassle.
