TomHoward
Hello Does anyone have any recommendations of 2kW fresnels or opinions on Selecon Arenas please? Looking for 6x Fresnels to replace 243s. Thanks, Tom
the kid
Arenas were nice when I used them ADB were horrible only 1 badly made gell/barndoor runner hat had screws in it so fitting both + screws were almost impossible. They were also very hot spotty most gel got 2 uses at most.
J Pearce
Arenas do everything that is asked of them without falling apart. The CCT and ADB stuff isn't so great at not falling apart. With the Phillips Lighting buyouts there is Selecon and a few left for generic lantern stock, not a huge range of choice. Robert Juliat have some nice (but pricey) fresnels and PCs I suspect you'll have trouble recreating the light quality of the 243s, not much about with such a big lens. TomHoward
We have a few little problems with the 243s, we take them out to light choirs and things in other venues, and the size and weight is a problem. The other problem we have is just that ours are in such bad condition they they need refurb anyway, and we've had a couple of incidents with them, in one a CP41 lamp exploded and shattered the lens, in another the barn door fell apart from the frame in it's runners and fell from the rig. I know both of these are realistically maintenance issues and not really related to the lamps but since the barn door fell we've taken them out of service until they can be restored and checked over, and as they're something I've had my eye on replacing for a while (for the size & weight issue) I'm just wondering if anything better/cheaper than Arenas is around or if they are basically the only option. I'm also looking at Arris as a replacement from the angle of ones easy to take around the place.

We retro fitted secondary safety chains on to the barn doors on our 243s. We did have a stock of spare lenses but have been slowly running through them, they used to be pretty common on ebay but have been getting rarer. The only plausible replacements seem to the the Selecon Arena and the RJ 329H
indyld
Worth looking at LED based studio kit? Again, Arri etc. I've only seen them in use in studios but recall that you may get DMX controllable versions. As this kind and age of high power Tungsten unit declines in popularity in various markets, gotta wonder what replaces it.
eamon
Hi all My personal preference for a replacement 2kw Fresnel would have to be the Robert Juliat 325H unit. It is a lovely unit and a nice lens size. I have 4no. Robert Juliat 329 PC's and I do like these. I find the fresnel version of them lacking hence the preference of the 329 fresnel. This is the expensive option. I have used numerous brands but have found that some of them are not great. Next option would be a selecon Arena. After that I would be unsure. ADB is a bit too clumsy for a 2kw unit. 3.5c Eamon
Junior8
When you think it was the Pageant that was deleted to make room for these it's amazing the lifespan some have had but the performance is so good it has been so worthwhile taking care of them. I don't think much made today would last as long.
gareth
If weight is an issue with your 243s, you'll definitely want to give ADBs a miss! They weight a ton.
