Some types of halogen lamp to be phased out

Some types of halogen lamp are to be phased out from September 2018, mainly the mains voltage double envelope types that consist of a small halogen capsule lamp mounted within an outer glass bulb.

If you use these, it might be time to consider alternatives, or to stockpile lamps. The ban applies to manufacture or import, existing stocks may sold or used without concern.

Whilst it might be argued that use of these lamps would still be permitted for specialist trades or industries, including entertainment, that wont help if production ceases as it might. I cant imagine continued production being viable for the small volumes used in exempt applications. I suspect that other types of halogen lamp will also be banned, though not without some years warning.

That link is fabulously vague...

"What changes exactly on 1 September 2018?"... ..."some non-directional mains-voltage halogen lamps (mainly the pear-shaped ones) will no longer be brought to the market".

"Some" isn't very "exact" is it?!

But thanks for the info, although I think we already knew a few years ago it was happening and this news is that the date's been postponed to 2018. What will be, will be. At least we'll still be able to buy GU10s for our Sunstrips.

For "some" read "all the common types used for household and similar illumination" but with exemptions for certain specialist types including lamps for less than 60 volts, coloured lamps, and some high wattage double envelope lamps.

GU10s are fine for now but are expected to be restricted eventually.

It remains to be seen how effective these restrictions will be, after all the "banned" types of GLS lamp are still available on fleabay and elsewhere. On the other hand these double envelope halogens never were that popular and might cease to be available even before the ban.
