Projector & 16:9 screen recommendations

Does anyone have any recommendations for projectors, maybe in the 8k - 12k range?

Price is an issue, as always, within reason.

We're looking to upgrade from a Christie LX605 (6500lm XGA), ideally need HD1080 or WUXGA in something with a little more poke, 8k+ unless there are any bargains to be a had a little brighter.

We'll also need a new motorised screen, something 16:9 approx 160 inches wide. Currently we have a 120 inch 4:3 motorised DaLite, we're basing the dimensions on the screen being the same height as the existing one but just a bit wider.

My go to for medium brightness projectors is Panasonic - I think they are one of the better brands on the quality/price scale. The PT-RZ12K is probably a bit on the expensive side, but has the advantage of being laser - which means that you have 20,000 hours of relatively maintenance free use - and at the end of that 20k hours, it will be at about 6k brightness. Compare that to lamps which are 1,000-2,000 hours and have a significant drop off in brightness over the first half of their life, Laser appears brighter for longer. Add to the fact that there are no lamp changes to worry about... I think laser has a good value proposition.

Alternatively the PT-DZ13K and PT-DZ10K are both solid, lamp based, workhorse projectors. All of are 3-chip DLP. If you are wanting to come down a bit in price, Pana have a new 8.8k single chip laser designed for the installation market. Pretty nice box.

Screen wise, DaLite, Screen Technics, AV Stumpfl. All good brands. My preference is Screen Technics purely because of their support down under (they have a local factory)

We went from a Christie LHD700 to an Epson EB-L1300U 8k laser in one of our rooms, trialled Panasonic and NEC and we all felt the Epson won. We're just about to install 2 more in other lecture theatres that had Pannys in them.

Laser advantages are worth the switch now IMO, unless you have a large stock of lamps to get through!

Agree completely with Laser being the only real way forwards. In the 10K brightness range. You can look at the Pana RZ970 or the Christie DWU1075-GS. We ended up getting the Christie in the end. The units are extremely similar in every measure except brightness where the Christie wins out and price where the Chrsitie is lower cost for both the base unit and extra lenses.
