I know what a WART is but why is it called as such. PSU alawauys works for me and normal people know what you are refering to!

They're called wall warts because when in use they resemble real warts, ugly (usually) black protuberances on one's body.

Thanks for that answer! back to the original question. Does anyone know the precise spec of the dc plug for modern G3 kit? Maplin sell a 5 way spiltter which looks useful. Sadly online so I guess I take aunit into the shop to find out size then order online?

Been to Maplin. They supply and elegant 3A psu. Also they supply a one into five dc lead. The amazing thing is the psu plug fits snugly into the back of the unit, but going via the multi lead it does not. There must be a tolerance issue. I am loath to use the "botch" approach suggested as I hire equipment out. Having siad that I dont get enough business to warrant buying official aerial boosters / psu units

What I did in the end was chop the connectors off the Sennheiser PSUs, leaving enough slack cable, then soldered on a DC plug which fitted my TOA aerial amps. Then I put an inline socket on the PSU, so that if I need to run individual units out of the racks I can mate both sections together and run it that way.

(A friend suggested the inline socket trick which is what made the whole idea workable - I didn't like the idea of sacrificing PSUs and losing the flexibility, but this approach gives the best of both worlds)

To echo Nick's experience above, we found that the difference in tolerance is very slight. We only noticed the problems when receivers kept dropping out during a rehearsal. It's an utter pest.
I'm selling lots of ex-hire and traded-in kit at the moment. Sound, lighting, video, and staging/rigging. More info here.

I'm about to order some new G3 equipment and I too have existing pre-amps/power connectors. I have just spoken to the nice man at Sennheiser on the subject and he assures me the connector is a standard one, in fact the same as the G2 series connector. If anyone needs to find a replacement connector, Sennheiser do a lead with a plug attached. The part number is 083304 and it costs about £8.50.

Just thinking lateraly I bought a 3A psu from Maplin along with one of their five way dc leads. As previously posted the connection was intermittent. Either the centre core was too big or the outer one too small, or even both. This morning I got my small vice and carefully squeezed the plug to "oval" them a little. Now they fit snuggley and all fine. I dont intend to be taking the units in and out so once fitted they will normally stay in their flight case. I will keep the psus for those odd jobs as individual sets. Total cost about £30 including the single psu. Plus of course there is the fifth plug for an additional unit sitting on top of the flightcase. Its an odd thing about the spec of plugs. Imagine if there is duff batch of the proper ones floating around!

Just racked up my new G3 gear. Crimped the power plugs as suggested and it does tighten the fit, however there is still an occasional intermittancy so I have searched extensively on't web for a 2.1mm plug with a "Y" centre pin or spring pin similar to the sennheiser one and only found one match in the states (whether it would fit is another matter).

S0 - again back to the original question - does anyone have details of a source of the correct plugs (without paying sennheiser £8.50 a throw?

Interestingly I have just run a show with my kit, ie two cases of four There were no momentary breaks at all, but I did find I needed to be fairly extreme squeezing when I did the mod! ie some look fairly oval but as I have no need of unplugging very often that does not matter. I did have a set of four psu's on standby!

Surely RadioSpares has those connectors. If you can figure out the size, buy one of each and see what works - they aren't expensive, and you'll use them for something eventually.

Except Maplin have an on the shelf one into five lead plus the psu which has plenty of current headroom. Saves a lot of needless soldering and as you will know this thread started because no one really knows the exact spec of the plug! I am spending my own money with a hope I can get my money back. If I was buying for my employer I would of course buy from RS or whatever because if it was the wrong part It would go in the spares cupboard! Its always different if you are spending others money to spending your own IMO

After trying the squashed plug method with limited success and trawled t'internet for a sprung "Y" pin connector to no avail I have bitten the bullet and bought 4 leads from Sennheiser.

These work!. Expensive but worth it for peace of mind.

one nice idea of using the bnc's for power too is that bnc's don't come loose.
