timsabre
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-32131530 ...forming a new company called "Lumileds". Can't help thinking I have heard that name before somewhere...No details of what happens to brands such as Vari*lite.
Judge
From what I can tell, Philips is selling an 80% stake in its LED and automotive lighting business to Go Scale Capital (owned by some other venture capital company) who already specialise in LED and auto technology. There is no mention of Strand/Selecon/Varilite in this deal although a separate article I found indicates that the main lighting division is going to be spun off as a separate company via an IPO soon. So it looks like they want rid of every thing to do with lighting and concentrate on medical market, which is solid with good profit margins, (and indeed its the only thing that is keeping Olympus afloat)That and consumer products - which has to be a high volume/low margin operation with massive competition from China and a really tough market. Weird huh?
timsabre
From what I can tell, Philips is selling an 80% stake in its LED and automotive lighting business... This is true... I was taken in by the BBC's inaccurate headline.Though for fully LED brands such as color kinetics, which division are they in?
musht
This is true... I was taken in by the BBC's inaccurate headline.Though for fully LED brands such as color kinetics, which division are they in? Guessing CK is entertainment division, used Cree LEDs for a while. Lumileds started out as a LED development , as in chip rather than lantern, joint venture between Philips and HP. Sam Jelfs
Old topic, but not been on here for a long time so my excuses... Strand / Celicon etc all come under the Professional business group of the Philips Lighting division. These will not be sold to Go Scale Capital as part of the lumileds deal. As it stands the separation of the lighting and the HealthTech halves of the company will be going ahead next year, Lighting is not being sold off, rather spun out, with its own research division and the like. There should be little to no affect on the professional entertainment sectors for the next couple of years at least.
