DrV
We have an AmDram production of Blithe Spirit coming up and want to make some plates jump off a shelf and smash on the floor. Has anyone got the name of a supplier for unglazed greenware. I can't even find a Greek restaurant that still does the plate smashing routine. I need about 60ThanksDave
paulears
We did this nine years ago and didn't really have much luck back then either. I figured I could find something but frankly gave up with all the leads going dead. I suspect you'll just have to buy cheap dinner sets from aldi or similar and use those? Only other thing are house clearance sales. Nobody buys second hand tableware so could be a source of old thinner stuff that breaks? Old topic here In that topic is a source of breakable plats, still available at ten quid a plate!
andy_s
Long shot, is there a local art college or arts centre with a ceramics course? If you can negotiate access to a kiln, clay is pretty cheap. You never know, they might take it on as a project.
DrV
Good call - I'll see if I can turn up a contact at the art college. I don't want to use ordinary glazed china as it has sharp edges.
Dave m
Cheep crockery tends to be almost unbreakable as it tends to be rather clunkyOlder second hand stuff ( charity shop stuff) tends to have had a harder life and may have already been dropped so be prestressed ?No idea if carefully dropping a stack would help with stressing ( as a pile, expect to loose a few) or drilling a hole in a plate makes it easier? T*ny
Do you have a local pottery painting business anywhere close? They have unglazed crockery which can be painted to suit. Scoring the backs of the plates with a glass or tile cutter will help too.
alistermorton
Hoppy craft shops (see what I did there) sell unglazed crockery to paint. Not the cheapest option but might be affordable.

the kid
This place http://www.vasisrestaurant.co.uk/gallery/ says they do it so might have a supplier. - the "modern" thing is to throw potted flowers it seems. which seems worse ? but better than the old "throw knives at dancers feet"

The guy at the restaurant gave me the name of his supplier. For future reference it is V & S Catering Supplies in Camden (not to be confused with V & S Catering in Wolverhampton) and they can supply them at £5 + VAT for a box of 12. Will be taking a trip up there shortly. Thanks "kid" Dave
