Touring Switzerland

Dear All;

 

 

 

We'll be doing a tour with a Philharmonic Orchestra in October.We'll start to tour from Germany and finish at Zurich Switzerland.

 

 

 

Do we need an ATA Carnet to bring some of our equipment into Switzerland.

 

 

 

However after checking on some websites, someone has told me that these are optional.

 

 

 

Has anyone had an experience of taking equipment in toSwitzerland without a ATA carnet? And what are the possible problems if we dontget one?

YES required -- unless it is instruments with individuals who could claim them as personal belongings

 

But be careful You do not mention OUT

 

It is essential that every single item LEAVES Switzerland and returns to EC, preferably all on the same truck

 

"Finishes at ,,,,," Beware of things being taken by musicians after the last date

 

You may NOT include items for sale ie programs or disks

since the OP has his location listed as Istanbul I don't think your advice is very relevant here.

Specific written advice needs to be obtained from swiss representatives in Turkey as to what paperwork you need and what is/isn't allowed. There won't be anyone here who has comparable experience or expertise to help with such a specialist question.

Well, if the Orchestra are coming from Turkey to Germany, they'll already have an ATA Carnet to get into the EU. If they fill out the carnet correctly with enough entry and exit forms and countries, they could use the same Carnet to go from Germnay to Switzerland. Trying to leave the EU to enter Switzerland without a Carnet is asking for trouble. I'm sure there's probably a way of handling the customs aspect at the border, but would expect it to be expensive and time consuming.

 

Recently we had one of our team forget to get a Carnet stamped at the Palexpo in Geneva before driving to his hotel just across the border in France. The French Border Police stopped him and sent him back into Switzerland to get the carnet stamped. They're pretty hot on enforcing the Customs Border between the EU and Switzerland

The wonder of the ATA system is that it IS the same (ish) in any country - a duly stamped carnet can originate from any participating country and have exactly the same validity as one originating in any other country. Any local (perhaps Swiss) wrinkles are lightly to apply to all incomers in the same way.

 

A weird coincidence the meetings that formulated "The Convention on temporary admission" were in Turkey and the result is known as The Istanbul Convention 1990

I have interpreted the OPs status as a Turkish person moving a German orchestra - The carnet this needs to be issued in Germany /ec, probably to the orchestra or a member of its staff. If it is a Turkish orchestra touring to Germany then Switzerland then Derek is right a carnet will be in force, the liability figure may well increase as Swiss tax is usually higher than ec. It is just a matter of telling the issuer the full itinerary ( including exact venues for Switzerland) and getting enough (free) pages for every move on route.

The system relies on pairs of paperwork being brought together by countries customs administrations, this extinguishes the liability and the carnet is then discharged..
