Battery/rechargable small smoke machine?

Hi, I'm just about to set out building a train for our production of Railway Children and was wondering if you have any ideas for a small smoke machine to go in the funnel or perhaps the body that I can feed a small amount to the funnel.

Looking for ideas and suggestions at this stage.

The train is going to be approximately 8' high about 12' long over two castered 6x4 decks, running over a timber monorail track to keep it all together.

Fire away with your good ideas...

I have an Antari M1 Mobile fogger that has done me really well. I looked at the Power-Tiny but budget and last minute availability drove me to the Antari (which appears to be very similar to the Pea Soup micro rocket which was one of my other options).

There's an optional keyfob remote which does seem to work pretty well.

Now if you'd been looking for the toy train from the show then I might have been able to help..... I've got a radio controlled (rubber tyres to drive across the stage and steerable) flying scotsman complete with smoke. Built it for a production of 39 Steps.

One thing that would help greatly (same with any other appeal) would be if your profile had details of where in the world you are - that way anyone who might be local to you could make suggestions that could be beneficial.

I hired a very small unit from Sparks last year. It was one of those units that produces instant smoke by having a filament rather than a heater block and it was battery powered. Quite powerful too. Can't remember which model it was but they'd know what you meant.

"Ascot, Berkshire" is a lot more precise than most BR profiles

Indeed - DESPITE the BR T & C being explicit on that point... :(

Hi, my first post.

In the model boating world we like boats with funnels to spew out some smoke. Lately we've been seeing 'vaping kits' modified to produce smoke in puffs. The smoke fluid can be purchased quite cheaply and of course is free from tobacco additives and flavours. They are battery operated, have small tanks maximum volume about 5.5mls and produce quite a significant single cloud in one puff.

The vapour generating parts can be obtained as spare parts, I've even managed to get users to hand over their old units as they get "better" ones for their use. For us the most important aspect is size, the whole generating unit can fit easily in your pocket.

http://www.instructables.com/id/Battery-Powered-Fog-Machine/ for an example.

Since you're building an almost life-sized train I would be looking at a regular mains powered machine (probably 2, one for the chimney, one squirting smoke around the wheels) utilising an ultra-fast-dispersal fluid so that you can produce a much more authentic effect; look at a real steam train and you'll notice they produce huge quantities of steam very quickly.

There are some amazing battery powered smoke machines out there but even the best of them would be out performed by a £50 maplin machine and they're all very fussy about the fluid you use. If you can run a flying lead to the train "truck" then you also gain the option to add effects (or face) lights inside the train, all for less than the cost of renting a battery unit for a week.

Thanks for the info all, I was trying to avoid running cables hence the battery idea, but I think you are right regarding cost on this one...

I have been thinking of running a low smoke machine in the track area of the set and when the train is pushed on it should waft the low smoke up and on the the platform level along with a couple of normal well positioned smoke machines for effect... and the smoke stack idea might end up being a cheepo machine carefully piped and cable fed. - the vape idea is one to keep in mind for future. good idea that.

thankyou for all your help and info.

Cheers

Ian
