Return to the Forbidden Planet

Hi Guys

I am producing Return to the Forbidden Planet. From downstage to upstage stage left and stage right I want to construct a framework. It should have a platform where the rock backing singers will sit either side of stage approx 2metres up. Anyone got any ideas - it should be like scaffold but a bit more tidy in appearance. litedeck isn't quite right. If it had other cross bars on it this would give us lighting points to hang. Anyone got any ideas? To summarise a metal framework structure, metallic but clean looking, with a platform to sit on about 2 - 2.5metres in the air. Probably about 6metres from downstage to furthest upstage point.

Any other futuristic set ideas gratefully received.

Many thanks

Sounds like a bit of a truss structure might be what you're after there. Nice shiny bit of 12" lightish duty trussing, corner blocks, base plates, decking and sundry bits and bobs.

Alternatively, if something more scaffold-like but tidier than traditional tube & clip scaff is what you're after you could look into 'system scaffolding' (Layher or Cuplock for example).

Another possible use for an adaptation of several sections of nice, shiny, alloy scaff tower maybe? All ready made with suitable working platforms at various widths, built in access ladders and as cheap as chips.

Cuplock or Kwikform is easy enough but tends to be rougher looking though we had a shiny Cuplock set for a fashion show in a pic here recently. Anyone remember the link?

Whilst I agree that all these scaffolding/deck structures are good, old fashioned painted timber (and rock) can also look very effective.

The handrails were steel with keyclamps, but everything else was wood!

Planet and the Minack, eh? Great idea. Don't forget all the Doughty stuff - all sorts of weird and wonderful shapes and gizmos are possible. You can do strange cranes and extending bits and pieces with the sliding couplers, and bits of rope. Kind of like old fashioned Meccano.

Probably my favourite musical, and even odder as Bob Carlton's pro show is touring at the same time as the amateur show (being done locally near me too) - which must be great for marketing the amateur show, and also a good draw for the pro version. Common sense at last!
