TomHoward
Has anyone used Sinfonia from Realtime Music on a mac? We're trying to get the trial working with a view to using it on a show in the autumn, but having a few problems I suspect might be permission based. dbuckley
Not helpful, but... it used to be a Mac-only product; TIL there's Windows versions too! So it's odd it doesn't work on it's primary platform.
TomHoward
I'm thinking it's a problem with the particular show I'm trying to trial. I've got other shows working but I can't open Jekyll & Hyde from their installer. I've been in contact with support but I've tried it on 3 installations now - if anyone with a working installation was able to use ShowDelivery to download the Jekyll & Hyde content and see if it opens for them I'd be grateful. TomHoward
I've got it working now. There were a load of system files in the /Library/ and /User/LIbrary folders that aren't deleted on an uninstallation and the old show files still being present was causing an issue with the new show version. timo
I operated Sinfonia for a youth production of phantom of the opera a few years ago where there was not space in the theatre for a full orchestra. Overall our experience was not good. Sinfonia is a good idea in principle but we found it was badly executed and not user friendly. We used sinfonia along with a few key live instruments as some of the sounds produced by the software were just of a very low standard, but also as a back up in case it all fell apart. Granted though, the mixture of live instruments and electronic ensemble sounded great and had the texture and feel of a full orchestra. Initially, we had hoped it was possible to just press play for some tunes and it would run itself; but on numerous occasions random bars were set to double or more of the intended tempo, which made for some entertaining rehearsals where the music would just fall down a hill! Although these could be changed, the editing process was not intuitive and it definitely felt like a loosing battle; so it was decided we'd input the tempo manually for most the show using a midi keyboard (which was also great for tying in with the live instruments). It was difficult to use during the show, if you made an error it was a struggle to get back on track although practice does reduce this risk. On the whole I would not touch it again; although there are positives we invested so much time and effort into making it work. If you can get a core band with a versatile keys player that has some good synth sounds to pad it out I would strongly recommend it over sinfonia! TomHoward
Thanks for this - we were pretty concerned about some of the sounds and were wondering whether it would be possible to route the MIDI out of it into Logic to control the sounds a bit more, but it seems this isn't possible.
