The thread has been very successful in the general technical chat, so let's see what us students can do, with our shoe-string budgets and aged lighting rigs.

Remember:
  • Host the photos somewhere publicly available (photobucket.com is always good, facebook isn't!)
  • No more than 3 photos per post - pick the best 3
  • Add a caption under each photo telling everyone what it's about
  • Be careful what you post - the photos can be seen by everyone, so get the "talent's" permission, or post photos of the lighting states without pesky actors detracting from the glorious scene.
So, lets see what we can produce...

The x-factor at Kimbolton school-
Using 10 Mac 250's Washes kryptons and entours. Also using general lighting such as pars, led pars ect.
I have had permission to share these pictures.

This was a small state for a maroon five song, this cue was only used for about 15 seconds every 40 seconds or so, for a very upbeat part of the song.

Posted Image
this was the lighting state for Amy Whinehouses Valerie, ignore the actors on stage, they were not meant to be lit, as this was taken during free rehearsal time. (Ignore the random light on the piano, they needed it so they could see during free rehearsal)

Posted Image
this is the previous one being used on the actual act.

Twas a good night,

Edd

Nice one, I really liked all of them but I thought I better not quote them all. I'm at Kings Ely and have got a battle of the bands in about 8 weeks, will post pictures up then. However, we have next to no budget for it. I'm currently trying to get a few quid to get some monitors for the bands and maybe a few more parcans. Although next year for our major musical I do have budget...hehe, don't know how much at the moment but I do know it'l be enough to make it big and special...

Ok, ive just found some of our pictures from December 2006, Return to the Forbidden Planet!!! I was LD/Lighting Op. Mainly generics, 4 Mac 250+'s, One sirius 24 one fat frog. Fat frog for the 4 movers. We were going to run everything of the frog but we forgot to hire a demux. 18 channels of dimming, about 30 generics used. 12 Acclaim Axial 18-30 something zoom profiles. 6 Par 64's and the rest quartets. How I remember this, I don't know...

Well, I am liking those pictures, but mine are typical school show, no budget, use what you have got, although I did manage to get some new gels and re focus (they were pointing at weird angles)
This is the only show I have pictures of from within the hall on the typical rig, it was from rats (pied piper):

(Sorry, these pics won't work as there are spaces in the filenames, you can still view them here - portfolio section)

and here are a few pics from our outdoor event, bit of a step up from the useless rig in the hall:

mods please help I can't get my pictures to be smaller, they keep resizing to actual size :stagecrew:

Moderation: Fixed. You need to stick th_ in front of the start of the filename for the images you display, but leave it out to link to the full quality versions on the server.
Enjoy

Here's a show I lit in 2005 called Back to the 80s... I was 15 at the time.

Gear list
- 6x Mac 250 Krypton
- 4x Mac 250 Entour
- 2x Mac 550
- 1x Mirrorball
- + all the inhouse lanterns

Believe it or not the budget for lighting was only $550 for a 3 day run. I did have to do some free labour for the companies that hired out the equipment, but at the time experience in the industry was golden for me so it was all win-win. :stagecrew:

A quick question??

Can I add a couple of photos from an Adult College in here?

The photos are not strictly in house productions.

Our first proper show at the BRIT school last week, called "Joe". It was a made up piece and our group had to do everything, set/lights/sound/costume/management for the show. I was one of the lighting designers, and I just thought I'd put a few photos up, there may be more when we can find them.

Jesus Christ Superstar, using a lighting truss as the cross he was crucified on; to keep with the rock gig concept we were given. Rig consisted of a lot of 1k starlettes, even more 500w fresnels, and 4 DJ type stairville 250w halogen movers (not dimmable which presented a challenge!) Budget was non existant so was rather impressed with the results. Just goes to show what a largely generic rig can achieve.

Can't figure out how to get an image on here, so just follow the link to my website and click on the 'Jesus Christ Superstar' album to see the photos. The ones at the end when he is being crucified are probably the best.

Comments are welcome.

It does take a little time for them to load, so please be a little patient

An honest, comment, regardless of age or inexperience but I thought most of the lighting and staging was a mess. It was good in places, but next time, just look out for unslightly spill on tabs and cloths - and if your going to have sections of shiny truss showing, take all the bits of tape and s*ite off it!!! and there was a bit of cable hanging down that looked as though it shoudnt of been there.

Just nit picking really. It did look good, but these small attention to detail let the presentation down a bit. Good pics at the end though with Jesus on the cross!

Mmm. I didn't really like the gallery program. I couldn't work out how to stop it! :D

You're right about conventional rigs, I love em myself. I mean, there's a time and place but often movers just add problems.

Constructive criticism, as has been said general tidy up would be a good thing. I always leave 1/2 an hour before the dress to tidy up and make things look perfect. This is made easier if you have a very nit picky stage manager. (that cable in one of the pics definitely shouldn't be there!)

I'd also think about using some other colour and just tidying up the focus. Everything seemed a bit pinky/red, which not all the scenes in JCS need! Possibly a bit more illumination needed in general (ie more steel/white to help pick the actors out from the set).

Oh, love the flightcases! How cool would it be if Jesus was actually on tour? :(
