Another Judas hanging

A man has died after accidentally hanging himself while playing Judas in an Easter performance.

The 23-year-old, who has been identified as Jose Ignacio G. was preparing to replicate the scene when Judas hangs himself after betraying Judas when the incident occurred.

He was standing on a bucket with a wire tied around his neck when he lost balance and was left hanged from the tree, according to el Universal.

People watching the show in Barranquillas in western Mexico rushed to the scene, however, were unable to save the man who died on his way to hospital.

Very sad.

But avoidable, there are various way to simulate hanging that SOUND safe, yet fatal accidents continue to occur with distressing regularity. In this particular case, it did not even SOUND safe, surely the risk of falling of the bucket was entirely foreseeable.

It would have been less dangerous, though by no means safe, for the wire or rope to have had a very weak link inserted AND for it to not to be fixed to the tree. Even with such precautions I would consider it to be less dangerous rather than safe.

In my view, no simulated hanging that involves a real noose attached to a real person can be considered safe.

I used to do the sound for such an event and have stopped them doing the identical thing several times over the years, in the end they hang the rope on a piece of wool or gaffa tape it up etc. In the final rehearsal about 10years ago (in fact the last time the parade was performed) the legs of the plastic kiddies stool spread out and the only injury was scratches from the ground. He wasn't actually in the noose at that point but it could have just as easily collapsed 30 seconds later... I felt better even in no-one else realised what could have happened.
