Rigging system solution

Hi Guys

 

Were trying to rig a working chandelier therefor we will need a rope, and cable from our fly tower. We are trying to devise a system where we can start the chandelier in a lower position (Deck) for the first scene then in the second scene we want to pull it up to a higher position however we would like the mains cable feeding the lamps to coil at the top where the pulleys are so we only have to have a pulley on the rope rather than the cable. This is so the cable remains tension with the rope at all times.

can you beg/steal/borrow/hire a marcaddy reel, or try and do something with something like this...?

 

Beware that some of those spring loaded reels have a latching system so you have to pull then release to get them to wind in, which would obviously be unsuitable.

indeed...that's what I meant to imply by 'do something with' (ie disable or remove the latching system) should a marcaddy not be an option.

Do you have enough masked fly height for the cable and rope to go up and down together on a bar or similar?

 

If not, if you have the right height you can sometimes make this work - fix the cable halfway in the masked height, such that at full out dead the cable slack loops down to just above the border, but has enough slack to drop in for the lower height.

ok , distance from the grid where pulleys are to the deck is 10 meters. I've already devised a proper pulley system for the ropes. Basically I have three chandeliers on one gridded hemp bar. Attached to the bar are three lines to three chandeliers via Barton 320kg SWL pulleys on Doughty Hanging clamp Eyes. I dont think a self latching system will work as the chandeliers need to be raised without anyone coming on stage.

Does the chandelier HAVE to be mains powered? What about a small 12V battery, wireless DMX receiver and a small dimmer? That'd be super safe from a flying perspective.

 

 

I once did similar with a giant mirror ball, though I couldn't source a low voltage motor rated to the necessary size. Instead I bought a small UPS, snipped the beeper out of it and then rigged up a quick release cable going from the ceiling (one of those 3 pin connectors used on electric strimmers etc. with the locking lugs filed off so it just separated easily. When flown out to its' "home" position it was plugged in and charging, then when lowered the cable separated and the ball continued to rotate powered by the UPS.

Why a rope and cable?

 

1.5mm flex is allowed to carry a 5kg light fitting. How much does the chandelier weigh?

yes, but what heights is the chandelier working on? i.e. the "up/out" dead and "down/in" dead?

you're not retracting 10 metres

run the mains cable upstage (or somewhere out of the way). have loop of the cable the comes down from the grid and back up to the grid. Put a pulley in the bottom of the swap of cable and stick a weight on it (not to heavy). when the chandelier goes up the weighted pulley will pull the cable down etc. you will need to do some sums on the amount of swag and space available for it.

Can you not just fly the bar in and out to change the height of the chandelier? Or if they need to move independently, put each of them on their own hemp bar? The hemp bars do not need to be full stage width. If you have a grid, you should be able to access the pulleys. If you can access the pulleys then you can move and re-reeve them.

 

The cable can then run off the end of the bar closest to dimmers. As long as there is sufficient cable for the in dead, then it will fly. That way you don’t have to ###### about with Marcaddys or cable reels.
