LX-Dave
Hello, For my undergraduate dissertation in Media Arts at Plymouth University I am writing about the use of digital media; projections and video content, in a theatrical setting. I am attempting to answer (but not really) the very broad question "Why use projection in Theatre?" My essay will discuss the history of projected content on stage, from the early days of the Magic Lantern and Josef Svoboda / Bertolt Brecht, through to the relatively recent rise in use due to reduced costs of the technology involved. I will reference theorists such as Philip Auslander questioning whether these tools damage theatre's 'Liveness' and Andy Lavender discussing the idea that projection upstages live action and provides spectacle / cinematics whilst detracting from the performance. I will also cite examples from shows I have seen and I hope to reference responses to this questionnaire in order to cite contemporary examples of why practitioners decide to use projection in their productions. If you are able to complete my questionnaire, ideally referring to shows you have been involved with, it would be greatly appreciated. For the purposes of simplification, projected/projection can also refer to content displayed on screens. Responses may be as short or as detailed as you like. gareth
A considered, well-written questionnaire, and a properly-constructed, informative and correctly spelled and punctuated post on here to request our input ... I'll be glad to help! A great example to others of how this sort of thing should be done ;-)
kerry davies
A rare beast indeed. A questionnaire I filled in and did not rant about. Have a look folks.
paulears
The thing that jumps out is simply the chance for contributors to say what their experiences are, without having to fit into a pre-planned answer format that always reveals the spin! Jivemaster
Russia House, The questions tell all about the state of the questioners knowledge. In the case of amateur, or regional theatre, performances of shows that include video, there is the option to localise the video used to the performance location. Thinking particularly about the Driving In My Car number where street scenes from the locality can come up on screen, rather than a generic "City Blocks" vid. timperrett
Hi - I will try and complete your questionnaire tomorrow, but check out this link to a post I put up a while back - feel free to use it as reference material for what was happening 10 years ago and maybe an opportunity to contrast with today - it may also help give you some further reading material. I got a 1st for it, so it can't be all bad! PM me if I can be of any further assistance
calmcl1
Hmm - unfortunately, I've come across this too late to fill it in, but it looks like an interesting talking point; I wrote a dissertation on almost exactly the same subject last year :)
