This is still completely true, with the caveat that ffdshow is currently unmaintained, and hasn't been updated since 0ct 2019. When windows encounters a media format it doesn't have a codec installed for, it will search for one on windows update. A codec installed via windows update will get security patches. It's safer that way, but do feel free to choose convenience over security .
