Mackie 24.8Bus Faults, parts and problems

We were doing some trial runs for our music tech recording at school today, the main job being getting the mixing desk up and running again after several years of neglect. There are a couple of problems we noticed with it but couldnt see how to resolve them, even with a bit of googleing.
The first problem is the buses are a bit temperamental, 1 and 2 being the worst. They seem to take a minute to "warm up", and occasionally stop and come back again. Buses 1 and 2 we got working for about five minutes before it they stopped again. Googleing this came back with the ribbon wiring inside the consoles is cheap and should be replaced. A couple of people seem to have bought kits for about £60, but I can't find one anywhere. Does anyone know where one of these would be available from?

The second problem was when we turn on a channels EQ to do the mixdown, it caused low frequency feedback. The only thing we could think of was phantom power was on, but we didnt have time to see if this was the problem. Any ideas? A condenser mic was plugged in, in the other room, and we were wearing headphones so I doubt feedback from that.

IF you have the necessary skills and the approval of the teacher responsible for the gear, your could try opening up the board and removing/reseating the various ribbon cables connecting everything inside the case. Loose/corroded ribbon cables are a know Achilles heal for the Mackie 8 bus (and many other Mackie models).

However, dismantling the board takes patience and skill so it may well be a job for a qualified professional.

Any ideas about the EQ causing feedback?

it could well be a mains hum, but surely it would be there all the time and not not just when the eq is on?, which led me to think of feedback.

Being the temperamental thing it is, there where no problems with the eq today!
