Help
Hi,
I have looked after a local church drama groups sound for the past few years but now it is closing down due to lack of interests they have given me (for free) the 4 wireless microphones they bought last year. Obviously I am rather pleased as they are useful but I am trying to get some new headsets for them but I can not find any with the right jack on the end. They need a 3.5mm jack which is fine however they have to be incredibly thin to fit into a hole in the belt pack and then plug in. Is quite effective strain relief but a bit of a pain. I bought some of the £5 CPC microphones and a selection of different 3.5mm jacks to solder on but none of them fit. Hence my question does anyone know where I can buy these very thin jacks? They are 8mm (ish) wide.

TOA Radio Mic Connections Can not find the right connector.

The solution's possibly cheaper than you think - with a sharp knife, shave the plastic barrel of the jack plug that comes with the 3.5mm cheapies. That was all it took for us with a different model of TOA beltpack where the initial plugs wouldn't fit. Not elegant, but works - and no soldering required!

What I would do is cut the lead about 10cms from the plug that fits ok on your unsuitable headsets and fit a mini XLR connector. On your new headsets I would then fit a matching mini XLR. Most headsets/lapels are available with these type of connectors already fitted.
If the lapel mic you bought has got a 3.5mm jack already fitted you could buy a matching line socket to fit.

I would do that but I am reluctant to cut up the working headsets as I am sure they will be useful for some things... But not for the theater I am doing in a few weeks time :/ It is a very good Idea but I would like to avoid it for as long as possible....

Then you just need to also put a matching connector on your existing unsuitable headset so that they can still be used via the adaptor lead.

I had the same problem a couple of Years ago..... The solution: email the toa help centre. They have noticed this problem and buy thin jacks in mass quantities and sell them on for a reasonable price. Think we paid about 70p each for 20. Mind you the connections inside the jack are quite tight so a steady soldering hand is needed but Good luck!
