speakers for a youth centre

we are converting our spare church hall into a multi-use site, with it being used a youth centre / mum's & toddlers etc most of the time. We will be upgrading (not that it is difficult from 4 x DAP Audio cheap EV SX300 copies and a very broken Behringer desk!) our sound, and having a semi-installed system.

We will need four speakers (probably), but what are our options for speakers that are durable, so will take a kick from a soft football without the need for a guard? Budget is a funny thing, but I guess somewhere in the region £1,500 - £2,000 would be good, and if that could include the amp.

In terms of desk, I will keep an eye on the parallel thread for small mixers, as we currently run an A&HGl2800 for Sunday's so having another A&H product would be good.

We probably plan to house the amp in the same rack of the desk so that it can wheeled in and out without too much hassle.

What Digital Desk

So,

I have been hiring & using a Roland M400 or LS9 / M7 on a regular basis for live music jobs and have decided to make the great leap and invest in a digital desk with accompanying stage-boxes over cat5.

While I really like the simplicity of the M400, I preffer the M7, but have been looking at the likes of the Digico SD9 and Soundcraft vi series. Then there's the A&H I-Live.....

I am pretty certain that there are die-hard fans of each variety, but seriously, which would be the best to go for with long -- term adaptability. I am touring the rig in medium (350 - 800) sized venues and want the best possible platform.....Recomendations?

Cheers

Line 6 Digital Radio Microphones

Have you seen these?

I've got a lot of time for the Line-6 company, having one of their modelling guitars. They've developed a digital 2.4GHz radio mic system and the handhelds have the modelling system built in, so they mimic the characteristics of these microphones:
Shure® SM58®
Shure® Beta 58A
Sennheiser® e 835
Audio-Technica® AE4100
Audix® OM5
Electro-Voice® N/D767

I've no idea about the electronics, but if the modelling is as good as their guitars, and the RF system proves effective - these could be very useful tools for us.

Anyone else know any more infomation?
P

Amplifier BIAS

Hi There,

I have a question that maybe someone with a little more experience could help me with. I have a power amplifier. It was distorting at low volume so I turned the BIAS Pot and var resistor to allow more current, now when I run 240 watt load off of a 260 watt amplifier (There is headroom clearly there) and I am not even peaking the input signals or amplifier the heatsink literally burns my hand and a strong smell of overheating occurs and thus cutting out the signal to the loudspeakers as it gets so hot! I have moved the amp up in the rackmount for some airspace between the next one, thinking this is also a possible cause? I need to have a good quality sound without compromising on damaging the components. If you are asking why I touched it, in the first place, it was due to high disortion at low volumes in the first place. Which shouldent be the case. Is there a more deep seated problem with other electronics on the board for this to happen in the first place?

Many thanks, all help appreciated!

SPL Max vs. SPL sensitivity

Hello All,

I am looking at two subwoofers:

One brand (d&b audiotechnik) gives its SPL as a max figure - 139 dB @ 1 Meter (Source - Pink noise with crest factor 4) - Power handling 600W RMS 2x18" drivers 37 - 90 Hz

The other (Logic Systems) gives its SPL as a sensitivity figure of 102 dB @ 2.83V - 1M (Source - Band limited pink noise) - Power handling 1000W RMS 2x15" drivers 40 - 150 Hz

Is there a way to convert one of these SPL figures into the same type or this a silly question and I'm missing something? Which is the most efficient? Sorry too if this is old ground but I had a look on the forum search and couldn't spot anything.

Regards, Sam.

Face Mic's

Not really sure how to phrase this, but over here in Sweden TV seems to have a obsession with face mic's not lav's or hand held or mics else where. I am talking about great hunking mic's attached to the side of the presenters face.

I have also seen them on guests, as well as "live" bits on kids TV with the kids wearing them as well.

IS there any advantage to them over lavs?

Wireless Microphones

Hello,
I run community music groups around the area. Mostly singing. We have some choirs where occasionally there are lead singers. It would be nice to have some wireless microphones (probably 2) so that they can sing and swap over etc without worrying about leads.
I'm on a budget so can't afford to make a mistake.

Can anyone recommend a 2 microphone wireless system that would suit? I hold my concerts in local community centres so there is no existing equipment. Just what I bring. I have speakers and a small mixing desk. I'm assuming I'll be using channel 70 (?)
Thanks

100V LINE PA SYSTEM FOR FOOTBALL GROUND

I have been asked to have a look at the pa system we have at out local football ground. The issue i am having is the speakers are not in sync. Meaning when i play music it comes out of one speaker on the right floodlight and then there is a half to second delay on the speaker on the left floodlight. This makes it sound awful. I also tried adding another speaker at quite close prox to amp and im guessing as the cable is a shorter run it get the sound first. I have tried to break the speakers in to zone with little effect. Any help i would be very grateful.

MUNGA42
