LED Batons/Strips

I am currently running lights on an outdoor stage. (A FreeStage Medium, if you're interested http://www.stagepartner.at/index.asp?pg_nr...28&lang=en) upon which we have Rap/Hip-Hop Band primarily but we do have rock bands and gospel choirs every now and then.

We own 20 LED Par 56's and use them to bolster the show. Not by lighting the stage because at the moment even 1K floods a struggling but we use them to add a little bit more interest.

We would like to expand what we've got; to increase the impact of the lights.

I've been looking at LED Batons/Strips and think that is the way I would like to go. However with so many thousands available and good sales pitches Im struggling to see the pros and cons of batons.

Basically my thought is that the stage roof is very high above the artists so anything I do on lights is only jst in peoples line of sight but to suspend the Batons vertically would draw people into the show. I know this could be distracting but I want to upgrade from chases across the cans on the roof to making a lighting show that enhances the act on stage.

Will this work? or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Also: Blinders/Sunstrips Do they need dimmers? or are they jst run off individual power lines? and which makes and models are better?

Thanks in Advance

D

controlling NJD spectres

Hi all,

I have 5 NJD spectres which I use live when I play in a band, which I control with an NJD S-pedal controller.

I would also like to control them from FOH position when doing PA gigs. I have a Jester 12/24 which I use when I bring out my PAR cans and dimmers but this is of course quite difficult to use with spectres.

Can anyone suggest a small DMX controller which has limited functionality similar to the foot pedal (a couple of scenes and colour chases, possibly with sound to light capability), which I could put next to my mixer which wouldn't look so out of place as my foot pedal board.

It would of course need to be fairly in-expensive,

Thanks,

Steve

Light Jockey - Can it deal with Touchscreens?

Hi Guys:

Hopefully someone can help me as my long standing allergy to all Lighting Controllers PC Based is getting in the way at the moment!

I'm putting a spec together for a venue and the client has suggested that for one of the rooms they would like a Martin Light Jockey with a Touch Screen interface. Is this possible, and does it require any additional software on the Lightjockey PC to make this work?

I've had a quick google and a look at the Martin website, but nothing is jumping out at me so for the moment I am assuming that it will be fine with Touch Screens replacing standard LCD Monitors.

Cheers

Smiffy

Bizarre problem with LED's and Fat Frog

Hi BR.
Currently having a bizzare moment with 3 LED parcans and a Fat Frog.

The LED pars are patched in at channels 7, 13 and 19.
Each par has 6 channels - R, G, B, Col macro, Strobe, FX macro.

The first LED par works fine. The second par is non responsive. The third par only has B, col macro, strobe and fx macro working.

At the same time, when I bring up intensities between channels 37 and 42, the second LED par will react in some manner but usually only lighting at about 20% even if the channel faders are at full.

The third parcan does this as well, reacting to channels 43 - 48 and only at the most, 25%

The desk is in wide mode and I've checked the patch. Everything seems to be on a channel 1 to DMX 1 basis. The pars are chained one after the other and after the third par, the cable goes off to lasers and other effects which I've tested as well and they seem fine.

I just cant figure this out and it's one of the strangest problems I've come across. I've had to put them all at DMX 7 for the time being which they all respond to, but I'd like to get this sorted. Could it be a desk issue? The patch seems fine but could it be this?

Any info on the problem or fault finding would be great.

Cheers!

HOW TO setup Martin MAC 500 - FAT FROG and Dimmer Pack

Hi Guys

I have been asked to help out on a charity event with the lighting which I havent used before.
I am supplied a Dimmer pack, 3x Martin MAC 500 , FAT FROG control panel, 8 spot lights and 8 "back ground lights" (spot lights)

I need those to work in "groups", be able to control the MAC 500 2 units together, and 1 unit by it self,
4 times 4 spotlight in a group (allowing me to fade as one)

I have been supplied a disk that has a fixture of MAC 500 (mode 1-4) and a general conventional dimmer.

I need help to set it up and cpntrol it (basic functions)

I tried assigning the MAC 500 to fixture 1, 2 and 3 and then a conventional dimmer to 4. Sometimes it allows me to use the faders and control the lights BUT all at once (meaning fader 1 has an effect on all lights) and sometimes it has no function (when I reset and reassign fixtures).
Can somebody guide me through what I need to do please.
THanks

Newer lights vs Older Lights

Evening all,

We have 4 Strand T84 (1000W) in school which have been replaced/augmented by 4 Selecon Axial Zoom Profiles (650W).

Side by side, the Selecons seem rather brighter then the Strands despite the 400W advantage that the T84 carries. Now I'm sure the Strands would benefit from a clean but will this be enough or has the technology of lighting moved at such a pace that a modern 600W fixture can really outgun a older 1000W fixture?

I a kooky way I quite like the T84s.....despite needing a small truck to move one....and would like to use them more FOH if I could get them to match the Selecons more closely.

BW

Ian

Jands Vista T2

Hi All,

I've got a show coming up and I've been recommended to look at the T2... Has anyone really used this desk as I understand it's not really hit the market well in the UK, with very few UK users...

The show itself is probably going to be 72 dimming channels, 8-12 movers, 12ish scrollers and a bunch of LED stuff if that helps...

Also would anyone be able to give me an approximate hire rate for 7-10 days purely for the console...

Cheers,

James

Botex / Stairville dimmer - channels dropping to 80%ish

A while ago, faced with not enough money, and the need to replace our dimmers in a terrible hurry, we bought a load of these:
http://www.thomann.de/gb/stairville_ddx620i_dimmer.htm

(Actually, I think they're badged as Botex, but same difference)

They're wired for three-phase, and two of them have developed an interesting feature. If any of the channels from 1-4 are at 100%, and you then bring either channel 5 or 6 up to anything over 80% ish, channels 5 and/or 6 will go to 80% and beyond without grumbling, but 1-4 will snap back to what I'd estimate to be around 80%.

I'm certain it's not a desk or DMX issue, as it does it from the local control on the front of the dimmer, too. It does it even if there's no load on channels 5 or 6, so bringing up an empty channel will still result in a dip on the other four channels. It seems to be independent of the load on the channel that's dipping - we can have 50W or 2kW on the channel, and the same happens.

Anyone seen this before? Any suggestions?
