An oil (actually a mixture of oils) usually used as a lubricant, generally available in a spray can. The origin of the name WD40 is "Water Displacement 40th formulation".It was developed around 1953 by Norm Larsen to eliminate water and prevent corrosion on electrical circuitry.

Useful for removing Gaffer Gunk, apparently.
