More often that not, multipin connectors will be connected to the dog box to allow quick connect/disconnect of multicores and insert looms. This means that the multicore tails can be left plugged into the back of the desk inside the dog box.
The box on the back of the desk also makes things look neater, it can also make things more secure. It is rare that significant heat is built up within this box but sometimes vents or even electric fans can be built into the dog box for ventilation purposes.
Mixing desks with lamp sockets on the rear will need a modified dog box to accomodate these lamps. Below is an image of a mixing desk case with dog box. Note the access point at the side for multipin connectors, this is sometimes done with panel mount connectors, also note the hinges on the box for access to the rear of the desk.
A dog box will make the desk flight case deeper and in some cases higher.
Also called, cable compartment, dog house, dog kennel, rat trap, and others.
